I've chosen this audio as I feel the drums in the song are suspenseful and will tell the viewer something is about to happen. Generally I think this songs tone works well with my film. 

in my film I will also be recording audio to emphasize different aspects of the film, for example I am going to record audio of my friend breathing heavily to play over the montage of my character Casey freaking out to show more clearly his stress and panic. in this Jurassic park clip heavy breathing has been used to emphasize how scared the 2 are about the raptors.

The bright and loud city, the tall buildings, taxis and the people. we hear the hustle and bustle and see the outline of the cityscape.

we meet CASEY for the first time as we track towards him, He's waiting to cross the road along with others also going about their day.

Casey sighs in an anxious tone

EXT. STREET – MID DAY – MOVING

Casey feels discombobulated by the hustle and bustle of people passing him as he walks across the street and is fearful of them. He is scanning people’s faces in his mind. He suddenly becomes overwhelmed and starts to run weaving in and out in-between people.

EXT. ALLEYWAY – MID DAY

As Casey runs, he spots a filthy alley way and runs into it seeking peace and refuge. He carries on running, terrified. At the end of this tunnel, too consumed by his own fear he bumps into an old "FRIEND". This Friend waves to which Casey gives a scared but blank expression. The friend mouths "Hello" but no sound can be heard.

Psycalogical thriller

Me - A psychological thriller is a thriller film that incorporates psychological aspects, these films often have dark themes of mental distress and torment. some common examples of these are films like the joker, fight club, get out, shutter island etc. 

Peter Hutchings 2009 - "refers to narratives with domesticated settings in which action is suppressed and thrills are provided instead via investigations of the psychologies of the principal characters"

Hitchings idea can be seen clearly in "the Lighthouse 2019" we can see that this whole terrifying world is created by these characters mind when actually this all takes place in one lighthouse on one tiny island. 

John Madden 2012 - "psychological thrillers focus on story, character development, choice, and moral conflict; fear and anxiety drive the psychological tension in unpredictable ways. Madden stated their lack of spectacle and strong emphasis on character led to their decline in Hollywood popularity. Psychological thrillers are suspenseful by exploiting uncertainty over characters' motives, honesty, and how they see the world. Films can also cause discomfort in audiences by privileging them with information they wish to share with the characters; guilty characters may suffer similar distress by virtue of their knowledge."

I feel “The joker 2019” shows this quite well, when watching this film we are constantly thinking what will he do next and we are almost scared of his mind.

James N. frey 2010 - defines psychological thrillers as a style, rather than a subgenre; Frey states good thrillers focus on the psychology of their antagonists and build suspense slowly through ambiguity. Creators and/or film distributors or publishers who seek to distance themselves from the negative connotations of horror often categorize their work as a psychological thriller. The same situation can occur when critics label a work to be a psychological thriller in order to elevate its perceived literary value.

“Shutter Island 2010” used ambiguity to create suspense. In the film the audience is constantly questioning what is real and what is fake. This film is what Fray is talking about.

Film Openings

 After deciding that I wanted to do a phycological thriller I wanted to investigate openings of phycological thrillers to workout the conventions, iconography and aspects of a phycological thriller opening. 

Here are some examples of my analysis of these films.

Right at the start of the opening scene we see the boat emerge from the fog, this creates metaphors of the characters being in a dream like state and not being all their. When Teddy looks in the mirror and we are looking directly at him in a medium closeup we can see the use of split lighting that in phycological thrillers is most commonly used  to hint a character has 2 personalities in this case being reality and delusion. When Teddy walks past the chains used for restraining people this is vicarious suspense and causes tension for the audience. The director shows a 2 shot of teddy and his partner on the mission where we can see they are binary opposites, the director does this to show Teddy is all messy in terms of his clothing and looks confused which reflects his mental state whereas his partner is looking perfectly happy and is not messy. Near the end we see a long shot of the island they are going to which is expected in thriller films as it makes the viewer feel small and inferior to what they are against which creates suspense, along with this long shot we hear a parallel music score that adds to mystery and anticipation of the island. In my film I will definitely use split lighting to hint at my characters delusion.

This opening title starts with a scene in a suburban neighbourhood where a man is closing his boot then getting in his car, low key lighting along with a black costume is used which helps to hide the identity of this character which will make the audience fearful. Along with this contrapuntal sound is used which is very creepy and the director has done this to make the audience feel uneasy. We then see this dolly shot going along a set of trees which hints at ideas of mystery and adventure which is typical narrative of a thriller. The contrast between these 2 darker scenes and the happy one establishing the main character foreshadows his doom, furthermore in that scene we see him looking in his mirror which connotes self-reflection which is convention of the thriller genre. I will use the iconography of reflection in my film by using puddles.

This push in shows that we are entering the joker’s world, which makes everything that happens to him feel more personal and question are morals. The use of match on action edits of him mixing the paint and then applying it to his face shows that the joker is creating this character for himself. Closeups of the face are common in psycalogical thriller as it shows emotion. The over the shoulder shot is super significant as normally over the shoulder shots are used in conversation between 2 people however here it expresses that the joker has arguments and fights with himself. Furthermore, the eyeline match here of the joker looking in the mirror reflects his self-image and him crying tells us he is unhappy. The long shots of the joker dancing show how insignificant he is in the world. I am planning to use push in shots and closeups in my film to make the film more personal for the viewer like they are stepping into the world.
